K-Cup Succulent Planter

I’ve always admired thrifters who love scouring antique and garage sales for the perfect time to bring home, refinish and give it new life. So when someone in my neighborhood posted on a message board that they had a free K-cup coffee holder to give away, I jumped at the opportunity, having this specific idea for a succulent planter in mind.

The first step was to pick up these 1.5-inch terra cotta clay pots from Joann’s. As I needed 27, I kept a watchful eye out for a “40% all regular priced purchases” coupon which they have every so often.

I also happened to have leftover succulent soil from my rain-gutter succulent garden that we built last summer. But it’s fairly easy to make yourself, especially when you can order everything from Amazon. Everything can also be purchased from your local home-improvement store. Keep in mind that succulents are partial to dry conditions so it’s imperative to have a rocky, fast-draining soil. Once you have your materials, the following measurements can be used:

  • 3 parts potting soil
  • 2 parts coarse sand or turface
  • 1 part perlite or pumice

Once each of the pots have been filled with your soil mixture, make a hole (I find a disposable chopstick works well) and add your favorite assortment of baby succulents. As it’s currently spring here, I just went through my succulent garden and separated any new offshoots that I found. If you find any leaves that have fallen off, be sure to keep them as with a little time and patience they can be easily propagated. If you’re just starting out I’ve found several Etsy vendors (like Exotic Succulent) who offer a nice variety of baby succulents at a reasonable cost.

All in all this was a really easy project to put together and looks great as a dinner-table centerpiece.
